Cairn terriers are small and active working terrier. They are the smallest of the entire terrier. This breed is a great dog for the house. They are ideal for children as they can tolerate rough play. Cairns are full of energy and makes an excellent guard dog. They alert you to the presence of the strangers by growling.

Cairn terriers are intelligent, tenacious, lively, bossy, very clever, independent, friendly, affectionate, bold, fearless and courageous. They are spirited and restless, always seeking an adventure. This breed must be given time to run and play. 40 to 60 minutes per day, outdoor fun is ideal for them.

This breed is sensitive so, it requires firm but gentle training and discipline. They like to learn tricks, and thrive in obedience training. Without training and attention, the Cairn terrier will become bored and destructive.

Cairn Terriers have a foxy expression, hard coats and small, pointy ears. Their double coats are weather resistant, with hard, profuse outer coats and short, soft, close undercoats. Coat colors are cream, wheaten, red, grey or nearly black with brindle. The coat should be brush several times a week. The hair around the eyes and ears must be keep trimmed. During shedding, which usually occurs twice a year, the coat should be hand stripped to remove the dead hair.
