Dachshund originated from Germany. It is believed that it is closely related with basset hound. The breed was developed to hunt badgers and is still used as hunting dog, as well as companion.
Dachshunds are brave, intelligent, lively, curious and friendly. They make an excellent family dog.
They are called “sausage dog” because of their long body and short leg with robust muscular development. Despite their small size, they are good guard dog and they are aggressive to strangers.
There are two different sizes and three coat varieties of Dachshund. The two sizes are miniature and standard and the three coat varieties are smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. Colors maybe red, cream, black, chocolate, blue or fawn with tan points.
Their coat requires daily brushing to remove dead hair. Longhaired coat are prone to tangle so they should be groomed more often.
Dachshund can adapt easily to different living situations. However, all varieties need firm and consistent training because they have minds of their own. The Dachshund needs a fair amount of exercise so, long walks are required.
